‘Devotee’ is a work-in-progress which looks at consumer culture in Hong Kong’s shopping malls, latter-day temples where faith and hope reside in the next retail purchase. Focus is on the community of people who patronise, socialise and – in particular – those who work there, apparently unseen and unacknowledged. This lack of interaction within such a contained environment is contrasted with the forced intimacy of appropriated advertising images. The visual isolation of product displays, faceless mannequins and empty clothes further alludes to the inherent vacuity and transience of the mall experience. Call it Social Documentary LIte
